The Castlewood Senior Living Concentrates on Alzheimer’s Awareness

Category: Memory Care

Author: Carrie Gray, Memory Care Director

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed November as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness month, bringing the plight of those facing the diagnosis, and the need for a cure, to the forefront. Today, there are more than 6.2 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s Disease, and while research continues, a cure is yet to be identified. Arrow Senior Living is working to heighten awareness of Alzheimer’s disease during the month of November through discussion and education.

Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common form of dementia. It is a progressive disease that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills and eventually the ability to carry out the simplest tasks of daily living.

As of today, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s. There are medications that can temporarily help with the symptoms that someone with Alzheimer’s experiences.

Engaging someone with Alzheimer’s in a calm, quiet manner with minimal distractions can be effective. Speaking slowly and clearly while maintaining eye contact can make them feel more comfortable. Patience and offering plenty of time for the person to respond are other good things to keep in mind.

Residents that live in our Memory Care Neighborhood can benefit from our family atmosphere. We strive to provide a safe, loving, and calm environment. We use our daily routine to help minimize undesired behaviors such as aggression, restlessness, and agitation. We provide meaningful activities to help provide the resident a sense of purpose.

At The Castlewood Senior Living we continue to increase our knowledge of Alzheimer’s through ongoing education, so we can better empower those living with the disease and help their families to better cope. Our Memory Care Neighborhoods maintain awareness of this disease, while offering engagement, safety, and comfort to our residents.
