Staff Spotlight: Why We Choose Senior Living Culinary

Category: Culinary

Author: Cody Keel, Culinary Director

Every great meal starts with someone who cares.

Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.

In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.

We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

Discover why culinary team members at The Castlewood choose senior living, where food with purpose creates comfort, connection, and meaningful moments.

Creating Food With Purpose

As Culinary Director at The Castlewood, I came to senior living after many years in hotels and traditional restaurants. I wanted an opportunity to create food with purpose. Senior living gave me that chance.

In this setting, meals can make a meaningful difference in residents’ lives and daily experiences. Food is not only something served and enjoyed. It can bring comfort, spark conversation, and help residents feel cared for.

Residents at The Castlewood have also taught me through the way they approach each day. They show gratitude, kindness, and an infectious sense of community. Their energy is something I strive to match every day.

One favorite tradition is monthly brunch. These events give the culinary team a chance to create something special. They also bring residents together around good food, conversation, and celebration.

Serving With Heart and Attitude

Success in culinary in senior living starts with heart and attitude. Skill matters, but the desire to make every meal the best it can be matters just as much. That mindset helps turn daily service into meaningful hospitality.

A strong culinary team comes in each day ready to serve with purpose. They care about the details. They also understand that each meal is part of a resident’s home and routine.

One moment that showed the impact of this work happened when the team prepared a care package for a resident in rehab. One of the items he specifically requested was food from the community’s kitchen. That request meant a great deal.

It was a reminder of how much residents appreciate the service and care they receive. When a resident wants the comfort of a familiar meal, it shows that this work reaches beyond the dining room. It becomes part of what makes a community feel like home.

Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.

Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.

To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.

Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
