As Culinary Director at The Castlewood Senior Living, I approach each day with passion, not just purpose. I face new challenges, hear new stories, and find fresh reasons to feel grateful. I’m excited to share how I arrived in this role, what fuels my dedication, and what a typical day looks like in our community. My work goes beyond preparing meals—it centers on building connections, creating purpose, and making a real difference where it counts.
I’ve worked in the food industry my entire life. My first paid job was as a busser at age 14, and I steadily worked my way up from there. I’ve always had a passion for people. While working in a restaurant, one of our regular customers introduced me to his son, the Director of Nursing at a long-term care community. That connection led to my first role in senior living as a Dietary Manager—and I knew right away I had found my calling. Eventually, I advanced to the role of Culinary Director.
Several experiences prepared me for this role. Working closely with regular customers, planning and executing large-scale events, and cooking for high volumes all shaped the skills I use daily at Arrow.
What I love most about senior living is the abundance of meaningful relationships. Over time, the residents become like extended family—I’ve gained more moms and grandparents than I can count.
Each morning, I check in with my staff across all kitchens. I want to make sure everyone feels supported and see where I can step in to ease their workload. After that, I head to the dining room for hugs and smiles from “my people.” Those daily interactions are what fuel me.
If you’re considering a culinary career in senior living, my advice is simple: come with a heart full of love and compassion for seniors. That’s the foundation of this work, and without it, the meals lack meaning.
To me, success means happy residents and a supported team. I never leave until I’ve made sure everyone is okay and any challenges have been addressed. That’s the level of commitment both our residents and staff deserve.
At day’s end, I take the greatest pride in knowing I’ve contributed something meaningful—whether it’s a favorite dish, a heartfelt conversation, or a comforting moment. Thank you for welcoming me into your community and allowing me to serve at your table. I’m truly honored.
